Hey Reader,
During one of my daily rounds of AI research this week, I ran across a tutorial on how to create a master prompt to use with ChatGPT.
The idea was simple:
Ask ChatGPT (or any LLM) to interview you, gather information about your writing style and tone, your brand identity, and ongoing work projects, and combine it all into a single document.
You could then upload the resulting PDF each time you start a new chat.
As a daily AI user, it seemed like overkill since those concepts are already stored in memory. But it still sounded interesting, so I took it to ChatGPT.
Here’s what I found...
This idea of developing a master prompt is perfect for beginners who have no history with AI tools.
For anyone who has a favorite LLM and uses it regularly, it’s not necessary.
But I never want to waste a good idea, so I found a way to make it more useful for experienced users.
The Beginner "Master Prompt"
If you’re brand-new to AI, ChatGPT won’t know your writing style yet or have your preferences saved.
You can use this “master prompt” to create that foundation. I expanded it to limit the number of questions and give them to you one at a time.
Master Prompt
Help me create a simple, personalized master prompt I can use in any AI tool. Ask me one question at a time. Ask no more than 8 questions total.
Focus on:
1. My goals and how AI can help
2. My writing style
3. My tone and personality
4. My audience
5. Formatting preferences
6. My typical workflow
7. My tool preferences
8. Anything else you need to develop my profile
After all questions are answered, combine my responses into a one-page master prompt I can unload or copy/paste into any model.
Tip: If the chat asks too many questions, you can instruct it to stop at any point and create the document.
Shortcut for Experienced Users
For those of us using AI consistently, the system already understands a lot about how we work.
However, having a simple, portable, one-page AI style guide you can copy into any model or workflow could be a time-saver.
You can use it when…
- You’re testing a new LLM
- You’re building an API workflow (like n8n or Zapier)
- You want consistent tone across multiple platforms
Instead of ChatGPT interviewing you about your preferences, you can use this prompt.
Prompt for Experienced Users
I already use AI tools regularly and have an established writing style and workflow. Generate a concise, one-page "AI Identity Profile" that I can use with any model.
The profile should include:
1. My voice and tone
2. My audience
3. My formatting preferences
4. My brand and mission
5. My common use cases for AI
6. Any boundaries I've set for content
7. My preferred tools, platforms, and workflows
Ask me any questions you need to clarify what you already know about me. Ask one question at a time, but ask no more than 5.
After I answer all questions, combine everything into a single, portable master prompt. Keep it to one page, clearly structured for cut/paste or upload into any new LLM.
Try it this week
If you want to challenge yourself a bit, try running one of the prompts above and see what kind of portable master prompt you get.
Ask yourself:
- Does this sound like me?
- Would it help me stay consistent with new tools?
- Do I need to tweak anything?
You might be surprised how helpful it is to see your tone and preferences reflected back to you in a single document.
If you found building your own master prompt helpful, I’d love to hear how it worked for you.
Until next week,
Tanya
